About Prof. Dr. Christoph Eberl
Chris Eberl received his Diplom-Engineering (Master equiv.) and PhD degree in Materials Science from the University of Stuttgart in 2001 and 2004, respectively. During his doctoral thesis he worked at the Max-Planck-Institute for Metals Research together with Industry partners to understand fatigue at GHz frequencies in metal thin films. Between 2005 and 2007, he worked as a postdoctoral research associate at the Mechanical Engineering department of the Johns Hopkins University (JHU), Baltimore, USA. 4D textiles for biohybrid implants – Presented by Valentine Gesché, Institut für Textiltechnik of RWTH Aachen University at the 2nd edition 4D Printing & Meta Materials Conference, which takes place on 1 February 2017 at Brightlands Chemelot Campus in Sittard-Geleen, The Netherlands.

This talk will focus on 4D Textiles. By combining textiles with an isotropic non-textile 3D printed material, it will be possible to design structures with a time-dependent shape-change and thus open totally new opportunities for the design of biohybrid implants containing both a cellular and a technical component – the 4D textile). These so called 4D textiles will enable us to provide a fully system-integrated multimaterial-composite. The talk will give a fundamental overview on this topic and show some application examples. TU Delft researchers develop self-twisting of DNA-inspired constructs. Researchers at TU Delft have made flat surfaces that are 3D printed and then ‘taught’ how to self- fold later. The materials are potentially very well suited for all kinds of medical implants. They report on their findings in the October 24th edition of Materials Horizons which features this research on its cover.

New 3D-printed material technology lets objects be both hard and soft. Recently, researchers started to engineer not only the outer shape of objects, but also their internal microstructure. Such objects, typically based on 3D cell grids, are also known as metamaterials. Metamaterials are artificial structures with mechanical properties that are defined by their usually repetitive cell patterns, rather than the material they are made of.
